Why You Can't Internet Search Your Way To Your Goals

Learn about why solely relying on popular internet tools can limit your growth and progress towards your goals.

Key Questions

• Why do most people only use the internet to find answers?
• Why don’t people take action with knowledge that's acquired for free?
• How is convenience holding people back from achieving their goals?
• What are better alternatives rather than using the internet?

“Just Google It”

With over 1.17 Billion users, there’s no doubt that Google is the most popular tool for people to discover new information. A simple keyword search can instantly provide us with thousands upon thousands of results. However, the results that we see are often manipulated by algorithms controlled by paid advertisements, popularity, and our tracked search interests.

Most people settle with the immediate information that’s placed in front of their eyes without making any effort to assess its validity or quality. Those that do put in more effort, must invest a massive amount of time digging into the depths of the internet to actually discover quality applicable information.

If we have access to a limitless amount of information, then why don’t people achieve their goals?

Free Means No Action

Google and YouTube both can be used completely for free. There’s nothing more enticing than the word free because you don’t have to sacrifice any money for it. It costs $0 to find solutions to your problems using these platforms, but what is that really worth if you don’t take action?

Knowledge is worthless if you don’t use it. I believe most people don't take action with free knowledge because of three reasons…

The primary reason is value. If something costs nothing, then it can be very difficult for you to determine if that knowledge is worth taking action. The second reason is risk. If you don’t exchange or sacrifice anything for that knowledge, then you have nothing to lose if you choose not to take action. The third reason is opportunity cost. If there’s the possibility of many other free alternatives, then you may choose to not take action on that knowledge and instead continue searching for other easier alternatives.

There’s an enormous amount of value in free knowledge that’s clouded by hesitation and countless other opportunities. Whether it costs money or not, knowledge requires sacrifice. Time is the currency that’s always being exchanged.

How much time are you willing to sacrifice in exchange for free knowledge that may or may not drive you to take action and help you make progress towards your goals?

The Easy Way Isn’t The Right Way

9 times out 10, most people will choose the more convenient option over the difficult one. The internet grants us the ability to access information that can instantly solve our problems. What's more convenient than that?
Unfortunately, instead of applying what we've learned, we have become paralyzed by conveniency.

Most people are only looking for the best answer for them. The best answer is typically the most convenient option that leads to the fastest results. People would rather dismiss a difficult solution and continue searching for alternatives instead of taking action. We simply stopped practicing delayed gratification. We’ve digressed as a society to the point where we don’t know how to effectively process and implement information. I believe it’s because we absorb information without truly understanding it.

Knowledge without understanding is meaningless. If we took the time to understand the complexities behind problem solving, then we wouldn’t always choose the convenient option over the difficult one. I believe we often create a false perception of difficulty that’s based on our present emotions and current known abilities. The difficult option is often the best route because it teaches us the correct way to learn the knowledge and skills required to overcome the challenges that we must face to solve our problems.

Better Solutions

Mentors come before us to give us the gift of accelerated growth. They struggle to find the way, so we don’t have to. A great mentor has not only achieved the goals that we're trying to achieve, but they've also taught others how to do the same. They’ve already created a system that’s been proven to work. Getting a mentor means you can achieve your goals faster, with less mistakes, and with less effort. Mentoring is a lifetime gift that one can receive and one can give.

Programs are systems or a series of controlled actions that are created to get the end user (you) to a predetermined result (your goal). Every action has a reaction. The process to achieve your goals can systematically be broken down into small tasks that you can complete by fulfilling the requirements. Following a program can save you the time that it takes to piece together the right information for you to create a system that works. The best program for you to follow should be one that’s customized, structured, progressively challenging, and guided.

Books have been written for just about every goal that you may have. They’re the blueprint to your goals and also are another form of programs. Books are designed to guide you through a thought process to help you understand the messages (solutions) that the book is ultimately trying to teach you. Instead of getting randomized information on the internet, books consolidate the quality information and organize it in way that effectively teaches you how to use it.

Choose The Right Tool

The internet is a great tool to instantly find information about anything, but it’s not the best tool for everyone. The quality of information is skewed by the sheer quantity available which can paralyze most from taking action. Despite finding quality information and taking action with it, knowledge without structure or a long term strategy only creates randomized undesirable results.

Mentors can expedite the learning process and guide you directly to your desired destination. Programs can package everything that you must learn and do to achieve your goals all on your own. Books can open your mind to new strategies that can more effectively guide you down the path to success.

If your goal is like a house that you’re trying to build from scratch, then you can’t do it with just a hammer (the internet). You must choose the right tool to help you.
