Deep inside the depths of your heart is a power that can infinitely fuel you for the rest of your life. This power can be manifested from moments in time where you have an epiphany. Experiences where your heart, mind, and soul unify to completely change the course of your life. Experiences like this are rare and can’t be forced. Once you have one, it can fuel your actions for a lifetime. I was fortunate enough to have had several experiences that inspired me to change, but the experience that I'm about to share with you today is one that Spiritually changed my life forever.

Health Is The Greatest Wealth

The year was 2013, it’s my Junior year of my undergrad and I’m deep into midterms. I can still feel the stress cramming last minute studying for several classes. Little did I know, the stress was about to amplify exponentially.

I received a phone call from my parents. The holidays are just around the corner and they’re thousands of miles away. In my mind I thought they were increasing the call frequency because they were feeling the holiday blues without their only child.

When I picked up the phone, it was my Mom. I immediately felt an off putting energy in her voice. I asked, “What’s wrong?”. Nothing in the world could’ve prepared me for what she was about to say.

“Baby, we found out your Daddy has cancer.” The words paralyzed me. I didn’t know what to think, how to feel, or what to say. How can the strongest person I've ever known get cancer?

My Dad picked up the phone. He calmly proceeded to tell me not to worry and that they’re doing everything they can to beat it. I couldn’t help but feel like my heart was ripped out of my chest. Cancer was the biggest evil that took the lives of many of my family members.

The feeling of pain, uncertainty, loss, and hatred engulfed me during a time of tremendous mental stress. I was in a limbo of negative emotions that sent me into a frenzy. It felt like I lost control of my mind, life, and future. All I could do is wait and conjure the little bit of hope that I had left that my Dad could beat it. I used midterms as a distraction to shift my focus and attention away from what mattered most to me. No matter how much I distracted myself, the negative thoughts always saturated my mind.

During this time, I had a spark of hope. I kept asking myself the question, “What if?”. ”What if I could’ve prevented this? What if there’s something I can do? What if there’s a reason this is happening?”.

The answers that formulated in my mind gave me clarity. I didn’t know what the true answer was, but I felt like I was getting closer the more I asked. Suddenly, like the sun piercing through the dark clouds, an answer appeared. I realized that health is the greatest wealth. There’s nothing more valuable than being healthy. If life wasn’t predetermined, then what could I do to help others?

This experience gave me purpose. If I could help others by preventing or even taking away just a little bit of the pain that they’re feeling, then I’d be happy. If I could help others grow and achieve everything that they believe they could be, then I’d be happy. I focused my mind into the future and the present became clear. The future began to look even clearer the moment I found out that my Dad beat prostate cancer.

What's the most significant experience that spiritually changed your life?
